Which ServSafe exam does Idaho use?

The ServSafe Manager Certification is a food protection manager exam from the National Restaurant Association, and ServSafe states that it is ANAB-accredited. Whether Idaho requires a certified food protection manager, and which certifications it accepts, is set by state and local food-safety rules that change over time. Confirm the current rules with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare — Food Protection or your local health department before you choose an exam.

The ServSafe Manager exam content is the same regardless of where you take it. Only Registered ServSafe Instructors or Proctors may administer it, so availability near you depends on which proctors operate in Idaho.

ServSafe also offers the ServSafe Food Handler and ServSafe Allergens programs for non-manager staff. These are separate from the Manager exam and do not replace it. See our ServSafe Manager vs Food Handler guide for a side-by-side comparison.

ServSafe exam format

The ServSafe Manager exam is a proctored multiple-choice test. ServSafe offers print, online (with an in-person or remote proctor), and testing-center options; available options and prices change, so check servsafe.com.

Question count, time limit, and passing score

ServSafe states: “The exam has 90 questions; however there are 10 pilot questions that are for research purposes only.” That leaves 80 scored questions. ServSafe lists the exam at 2 hours. ServSafe states: “A passing score is 70% or higher. This is obtained by answering at least 56 out of 80 questions correctly.” Pearson VUE, which delivers the exam, lists a passing score of 75. Because the two differ, confirm the current passing score with your exam provider, and aim for at least 75% on practice exams to be safe. Exam policies can change.

Retests must be proctored by a Registered ServSafe Proctor.
